BLogicThink (B): First, I want to congratulate you for becoming a successful web designer and making great sale at ThemeForest. And thank you for agreed to do interviews with me
I am very interested in one thing. You must be got a lot of money from web design business. Do you live from make money online doing Web design business?
Plentong (P): Yes, web design is currently my main source of income and I hope it will stay that way.
B: How long have you been in the web design business? And where you get a web design skills?
P: I started making websites since 2001. My first website was terrible.
I used tables for layout until 2005. Back then, I started to like programming, especially PHP, and lost interest in designing websites. In 2007, I started to learn about CSS. This renewed my interest in web design, and I started to create tableless CSS websites.
B: When/How did you start selling your web design in ThemeForest? Did you ever sell your design in other places before?
P: I started selling templates at ThemeForest in April 2009. ThemeForest was my first marketplace website and I immediately fell in love.
B: You sell a lot of web templates and WordPress themes at ThemeForest Marketplace. From all designs that you sell, which is your favorite design that make you feel very proud?
P: I’m very proud of all my designs, but if I have to pick a favourite, I’d pick http://themeforest.net/item/majalah-magazine-style-template-4-background/79552
B: This question is relates to money? Which designs give you biggest money
P: http://themeforest.net/item/clean-blue-black-mac-style-software-template/44974
B: In 2010 there are many designers who want to start a web design career and success as you get, are you not worried about competition in the future of web design business?
P: No, I would be challenged to create better designs and to keep up with advancements in web design.
B: When designing templates are you made it to fit with what user needs (business, personal, corporate, magazine)? Or you make it based to your taste?
P: I usually make them based on my tastes, and therefore they don’t sell so well…
But I’m still proud of them, because they were made according to my liking.
B: What is your focus on making new web design or Wordpress themes? The Graphic, layout or a specific function?
P: The first thing is of course design (layout and graphics). Functions come next.
B: In your opinion what is the most important thing on Wordpress Theme design that people (both of blogger or designer) must consider?
P: Design and functionality of the template. And compatibility with most popular browsers, of course.
B: As a web designer, do you have an obsession that until now you have not yet achieve? And what is it?
P: Yes. I really want to have a website to put my portfolios on, and maybe also as a place for me to publish articles about webdesign.
B: In making wordpress themes and other design, are you have a web designer who becomes your idol? Who was your inspiration?
P: Jacob Cass dan Cameron Moll
B: There are many newbie designer, not all of them have great confidence like you. When the first time you add your design, are you directly get approve or also had rejection experienced?
P: My first template was directly approved. So was my second template, but my third template was rejected twice before finally being approved. The most important thing is not to give up. Keep on improving and fixing your template until it gets approved.
B: What do you recommend for beginner web designers to start their career? And what about those who want to learn web design and WordPress themes (this is me
)? What should I learn first?
P: Keep learning. Visit sites that discuss new design techniques. You only need to know about layout and graphics if you want to focus on design, but if you also want to code, you have to learn CSS and XHTML. And don’t forget to start learning about HTML5 and CSS3.
